CONTEMPORARY/LYRICAL
A modern dance collaborative style based on the
technique of Martha Graham, students will be taught a strong contemporary dance
technique consisting of floor work, footwork, turns, jumps, falls, tricks and
combinations. Students will be developing contemporary dance technique and how
to execute this technique correctly and safely. At SDS we also infuse Lyrical
into our Contemporary classes. Lyrical is a collaborative mixture of ballet,
slow modern and jazz techniques, it is the expression of emotion through
movements and phrases. In this class we challenge the dancers to find the
meaning behind the music and connect that to the choreography to tell the
audience a story.

ACRO
FROM TINY TOTS TO SENIOR
Acrobatics, called ACRODANCE, following the ACROBATIC ARTS syllabus is used specifically for dancers. It is a genre of dance which incorporates elements of gymnastics, jazz, balancing, tumbling, and basic contortion. Students learn Acrobatic tricks such as handstands, cartwheels, chest stands, elbow stands, walkovers, side and front aerials and tumbling. Trick movements are usually executed slowly to emphasize gracefulness, body lines and picturesque extension.
A beginner Acrobat generally takes about two years to develop a strong foundation before they start to really see the results of their hard work. Once a solid foundation is achieved, it is surprising to see how quickly students achieve their tricks. With a steady and patient approach, students will master these tricks safely and effectively.
